How to configure a Cisco Router, Switch, or Firewall from the CONSOLE port

for Cisco newbie's only-->

If you are new to using Cisco devices (routers, switches, and firewalls), these devices do not usually come with any kind of configuration. They aren't like Linksys or Netgear home routers that automatically boot up and give you a DHCP IP address.

To configure these devices, you usually have to connect your PC/laptop, using a Serial port, to the CONSOLE port on the Cisco device. Once physically connected, you need a Terminal Emulator to create the configuration. Hyperterminal comes with Windows Hyperterminal. This can be use to configure any Cisco device, either from the CONSOLE port or, once the device is on the network, using telnet.
